Description of obverse and reverse
The obverse depicts a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain. Along the edge of the obverse, there are engraved inscriptions separated by dots: “ELIZABETH II • D • G • REG • FID • DEF • 5 POUNDS”.
The reverse shows the profile portrait of King Cnut. On the right side, there are engraved inscriptions – “1017”, “King Canute”, “2017”.
A brief annotation
Knut the Great (Canute the Great; 994/995-1035) – King of Denmark, Norway and England, the ruler of Schleswig and Pomerania from the dynasty of Knutling.
In October 1016, Knut's army defeated the British forces in the Battle of Assandun. After that, on January 6, 1017, he was crowned in London and became a full-fledged monarch of England.
During his reign, Knut divided England into four regions: Mercia, Wessex, Northumbria and East Anglia, laying the foundations of the British territorial system.
