Description of obverse and reverse
Issued as legal tender of Tuvalu, the coin’s obverse bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by a chequered border, and the inscriptions ELIZABETH II, TUVALU, the monetary denomination, and the 2014 year-date. With the use of lenticular lenses, the coin’s reverse depicts Charlie Chaplin’s onscreen character, The Tramp, jauntily walking as shown in the closing scenes of the 1928 silent movie, The Circus. The imagery is bordered by the inscriptions CHARLIE and CHAPLIN, with The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark and the weight and fineness of the coin also appearing in the design.
A brief annotation
British actor and filmmaker Sir Charles Spencer ‘Charlie’ Chaplin KBE is the master of mime. The comic genius was the most iconic artist of the silent era, with his screen character ‘The Tramp’ becoming a global phenomenon. Providing decades of laughter to audiences all over the world, The Perth Mint captures his character’s cheerful and quirky walk on this collector coin by using layers of lenticular lenses, to give the illusion of movement as the viewing angle of the coin is changed. The coin was issued in 2014 to celebrate 100 years since Chaplin appeared in his first film, and 125 years since the birth of cinema’s most quintessential gentleman.
